Engagement Session 101: How to Prep for Your E-Sesh

As Florida wedding photographers, we LOVE capturing engagement sessions for our couples. An engagement session is an opportunity to get to know you a little bit better before we photograph your wedding day! Here are some engagement session tips, inspired by common questions we receive from our couples. ⬇️💍🤍

1. PROTECT YOUR SKIN BEFORE YOUR SESSION

Consider:

  • Flattering Photos: Avoiding prolonged sun exposure in the days leading up to your shoot helps prevent redness, sunburn, and tan lines that can show up on camera. Even minor sun irritation can create uneven skin tones and discomfort.

  • Comfort Is Key: If you’re sunburned or peeling, it can make you feel self-conscious or physically uncomfortable in front of the lens, something we definitely want to avoid!

2. PLAN YOUR OUTFITS

Consider:

  • Visual Variety: Consider an outfit change mid-session! One casual and one more polished, can give your session more depth and style range. It also helps match different backgrounds and moods.

  • Confidence Booster: Wearing something that fits well and feels like “you” helps you show up more confident and relaxed. It’s not just about style, it’s about comfort, too.

  • Storytelling Through Style: Your outfits help tell your story and can reflect who you are as a couple, whether you’re going for laid-back, modern, timeless, or editorial.

3. BRING COMFY SHOES

Consider:

  • More Movement = Better Photos: When your feet aren’t hurting, you're more likely to move, explore, and relax naturally. And that leads to better, more candid photos.

  • Quick Transitions: You can slip into your photo shoes at each stop, saving the statement pieces for when it counts.

4. PACK A SMALL ESSENTIALS BAG

Consider:

  • Prep = Peace of Mind: Having a few essentials on hand (snacks, sunglasses, water, hairbrush, lip gloss) makes a huge difference. Sessions can run long, and a well-timed snack can bring the energy back.

  • Quick Touch-Ups: A mini makeup bag with blotting papers, powder, or a travel mirror helps you stay photo-ready throughout.

  • Comfort Items: Think of it like a mini day trip, you’ll be thankful for anything that keeps you cool, hydrated, and fresh.

5. PLAN AROUND GOLDEN HOUR

Consider:

  • Dreamy, Golden Light: Golden hour (just after sunrise or an hour before sunset) is flattering for all skin tones, giving your photos a soft, romantic feel.

  • Consistent Lighting: It cuts down on harsh shadows and squinting, making it easier to capture naturally beautiful moments.

  • A Session With a View: Not only do you get to embrace your engagement session, but you also get to enjoy the sunset with your fiance!

6. HYDRATE & REST THE NIGHT BEFORE

Consider:

  • Your Energy Shows: Being well-rested and hydrated means you’ll feel more alert, engaged, and genuinely happy during your session. That good energy translates into your photos.

  • Skin Benefits: Water and sleep are the best natural beauty hacks. Your skin will look smoother, brighter, and more refreshed.

  • Stress Reduction: Rest helps ease nerves and gives you more bandwidth to enjoy the experience rather than worry through it.

7. ARRIVE EARLY & RELAXED

Consider:

  • Smooth Start = Better Photos: Giving yourself buffer time to get ready, drive, and park keeps you from feeling rushed or frazzled when the session begins. (Pro tip: If your engagement session is in Downtown St. Pete/Tampa, or on St. Pete/Clearwater Beach, or another area where you anticipate heavy traffic, make sure you plan ahead because finding parking may take a bit longer than you plan!)

  • Time to Connect: Arriving early gives you a chance to breathe, check in with your photographer, and ease into the space together.

  • Set the Tone: A calm start helps set a peaceful, joyful tone for the entire shoot.

8. BE YOURSELVES

Consider:

  • Candid Moments Are The BEST: The best moments happen when you're laughing, moving, and genuinely enjoying the moment—not just standing still and smiling.

  • Authenticity Always Wins: Photos that reflect who you are, your quirks, your chemistry, and your energy are always more memorable and meaningful.

  • Confidence Looks Good on You: When you stop overthinking and just have fun, it shows. Trust your photographer and each other. You’ve got this!
